BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Byron Center Public Schools paid $400,000 to a former student who was sexually assaulted by a former basketball coach and math teacher, newly released documents of the settlement reveal.
The payout comes after the former student claimed in a lawsuit that the district failed to protect her and follow its own rules about handling allegations.
Although the alleged wrongdoing happened more than seven years ago, 24 Hour News 8 just recently received documents detailing the terms of this settlement through the Freedom of Information Act.
The paperwork also outlines the former student’s allegations that instead of protecting her, administrators, staff and students mistreated her and said she was the one who should leave the district.
In 2015, Glenn Davis pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal sexual conduct involving one of the students in his math class. The crimes started when she was 15 years old.
Glenn, now 47, admitted to as many as 30 sexual encounters with the girl, including in a camper and at the home Davis shared with his wife and two young children.
