Hearing your baby say their first word is a milestone many parents wait for and some even repeat their name over and over in hopes that it will be the first thing their little one says. A new survey reveals the most common first words from babies in 33 countries around the world and it seems no matter where they live, lots of little ones end up uttering the same word for the first time.

A team from babysense monitors led the research to find the most popular first words in each country. As you might suspect, the most common first word babies around the world say is some form of “mama.” Infants in 12 of the 33 countries, including the U.S., said “mama” first, with “dada” or “papa” topping the list in seven countries. The second word spoken is often the other parent, in 10 of those 12 countries with “mama” as the first word, “dada” was second.

There are some surprising findings from the survey, including:

  • The most popular first word for babies in Australia is “jam”
  • Denmark’s most popular first word is “hi”
  • Babies in Israel reportedly say “car” most often for their first word
  • And Greek babies most commonly say “yiayiá” first - which is Greek for “Grandma”
  • The most unique first words babies say include “country” in Australia, “goose” in Canada, “panther” in Spain and “between” in Mexico.
