Mickey Guyton put a country spin on Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway.”
Guyton has been sharing covers of “songs that have always sounded country to me,” on Instagram. The Texas-born country artist started her series with “Let Me Love You” by Mario, followed by “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys. On Wednesday evening (May 20), Guyton posted her rendition of another early 2000s hit. She said “Breakaway” “has always had a little country twang to me! For part 3 I had to cover the queen of covers, [Kelly Clarkson].”
“I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly/ I’ll do what it takes 'til I touch the sky/ And I'll make a wish/ Take a chance/ Make a change/ And break away/ Out of the darkness and into the sun/ But I won't forget all the ones that I love/ I’ll take a risk/ Take a chance/ Make a change/ And break away”
Clarkson released “Breakaway” — written by Avril Lavigne, Matthew Gerrard and Bridget Benenate — as the title track of her sophomore studio album in 2004. That album also included “Since U Been Gone,” “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” “Because of You,” “Walk Away” and more. The original American Idol champion went on to win two Grammys and other accolades for the project. Watch Guyton cover “Breakaway” here:
